Background regarding Western Sports Media & ACMA's decision

As most listeners are aware by now, Western Sports Media was NOT granted a full time radio broadcasting licence on January 7th 2008 and subsequently had to cease broadcasting forever on 90.5FM at 8pm January 20th.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) decided it was in the best interest of the Perth community to grant 90.5FM  to Capital Community Radio and 100.9FM to Peedac Pty Ltd, (an Indigenous applicant group).

Western Sports Media congratulates the two successful applicants and wishes them all the best in their future endeavours to serve their respective target communities.

ACMA's decision ends Western Sports Media coverage of the WA Warriors, Perth Glory, Western Force, WACA First Grade Cricket, Women's Cricket, Lawn Bowls, Grassroots Soccer, Rugby League, WAFL, Martial Arts, Boxing and other sports as well as the stations commitment to Country Music.

On behalf of the whole team and board of Western Sports Media including Station Manager Colin Minson and myself Jason Dattilo, we would like to thank EVERYONE who did everything in their power to support the station and grassroots sport in WA. This includes our loyal sponsors, the many different sporting bodies, politicians, country music artists and of course, YOU the listener.

When 90.5FM Sport asked for community support  for its full time licence, the station received over 16,000 letters and emails in the space of just 6 weeks - clearly indicating a strong and loyal listening audience that believed in the station's purpose here in WA.

The station has had many volunteer presenters and behind the scenes people from all parts of the community, who have put in a tremendous amount of time and effort into the station's output and they are to be congratulated.

YOU, the loyal listener, is to be congratulated as well for your wonderful support and kind messages. It is very humbling to know the station has so much support from so many people, especially considering the station had, for just over 4 years, only 2 and half days worth of broadcasting time per week. Thank you very much.

Unfortunately it all ended for Western Sports Media on 90.5fm on January 20th 2008.
